PERFORMANCES

What sounds like a more cautious approach on the first listen of Haymaker reveals more fine distinctions with each additional listen, and with songs and arrangements obviously built with his band members in mind, this is Preminger’s most solid group effort yet. |

Ron Oswanski, December's Moon: Oswanski takes turns on Hammond B3 organ and accordion, and leads a set of all-stars on a set of lyrical modern jazz tunes. The sounds between the "Hammond tunes" and the "accordion tunes" are different, but not nearly enough to break a sense of album cohesion. Accordion adds a welcome rustic presence to the affair, which balances nicely with B3's aeronautics. Personnel like John Abercrombie and Clarence Penn are sure to make people stop and notice, but I was most struck by the contributions of saxophonist Tim Ries, especially his interplay with accordion parts. |

As their style meshes with orchestras, collaboration with The WDR Big Band Cologne would seem to be a natural fit. New York Voices Live With The WDR Big Band Cologne meshes the two musical entities flawlessly. |

"The pairing of New York Voices with the superior WDR Big Band Cologne results in a thoroughly fascinating listening experience. It documents a performance that encourages the audience to think as well as feel, to deconstruct standards and hear the group reassemble the melodies and harmonies. The flawless Big Band serves them well, and enhances their tight vocal blend. Pick up Live with the WDR Big Band Cologne and appreciate how New York Voices has matured since their late-80s beginnings." Click for full review |

"The big band arrangements, raw energy and excitement of New York Voices Live propels this elite group to another level. Of course that's not surprising when you combine four superb and talented vocalists with a world-class ensemble, the result should be, and is in this case, a sizzling vocal and instrumental experience." |

From the introduction of "Baby Driver," when the New York Voices pretend they are the Woody Herman sax section, "Live With the WDR Big Band Cologne" shows this is the best vocal group in jazz - |

.....Sharing a jazz ensemble field with Manhattan Transfer and the Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet has in no way dampened the group's efforts to carve out its place. In fact, New York Voices has done a very effective job, doing so with authority; the group displays a versatility that has been widely remarked upon in jazz literature and is in abundant evidence here..... |
